3 Simple Tips to Overcome Wants (Want vs Need)


Most of the time we think if I have little extra money than life will be awesome. We always longing for more and more in life. This life always wants little more as “ye dil mange more”. But have we ever thought about what we want and what is our need? There is a difference between need and want. Let’s see how a dictionary defines want and need.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a “want” is defined as having s strong desire for something. The word “need” is defined as lack of the means of subsistence.

In a simple way, Needs would be defined as goods or services that are required and Wants are goods or services that are not necessary but that we desire or wish for.

Most people are working or in job earn money to pay for their needs and some of their wants. At the beginning of the month, life is like a king and at the end of the month longing for more and think wish I could have little more money. This is the story of most of the people. Apart from the basic needs, we want to have some “extra” in our life.  These “extra” make our life more comfortable and enjoyable. These are the things we always long to have it but without it also we can manage it. Many of us want to earn more money so that our life will be more comfortable. Who doesn’t want to be rich in life? Everyone right. We think more money means more happiness. We relate true happiness with the money. But there are people in this living world they are more than happy without being rich. Many people fail to differentiate between needs and wants. They think their needs are their wants and more prone towards the wants. They wanted to overcome but failed in doing so.

1.     Separate your real needs and wants

One has to be very conscious in doing it as it is the first steps to overcome. People need to identify their needs and wants. When you categories your wants vs needs you will definitely surprise. Many times people are not able to find the difference between their needs and wants and think both are the same. Hence, it really matters to differentiate your real needs and wants.

2.    Think twice before fulfilling your wants

Once you able to differentiate between your needs and wants, it will be a lot easier and will able to know where all you need to spend. The second tip is to always think twice before you fulfill your wants. If want is a real want you can go ahead. But most of the time we think it’s our real want but that’s not. Many times the advertiser try to present their product to the consumer in such a way that consumer thinks it is a need for them but in actual it is a want.

3.    Focus more on real need rather than unwanted wants

The third tips I want to share is to focus more on real needs rather than unwanted wants. People always want more than what their neighbors have. If a neighbor has one car, people likely to have 2 cars or more costly car than their neighbor. These unwanted wants only create more problems in life. Hence, it is always better to focus more on the real needs to fulfill rather than unwanted wants.
